You cannot go to Bali and NOT shop. That is almost ‘un-holidayful’!! The town of Ubud in the uplands of Bali is haven for shopping. Top that up with some really tempting bargains and a lot of local flavors! One of the few places around the world where your money will get you more than your home-land. Ubud is a certainly a great place to shop for bikini, resort wear, bohemian hand bags & jewelery, sculptures or paintings. There is something for everyone to pack back home.

Goa Gajah Caves Art Market

Take a few minutes to scan through this compact art market. There aren’t too much crowd, so you can explore at your own pace. Expect cheap souvenirs, colorful sarongs, aromatic incense sticks, that signature handwoven round Balinese shoulder bag, and other tit-bits.

What to shop at Goa Gajah Caves Art Market

While you must save much of your swim and knit wear shopping for the Ubud Art Market, do pick a couple of memorabilia like incense sticks, tea lights, farmer’s hats from here too. Prices are lower, and don’t forget to negotiate.

 

Trivia: There is a café right beside the entry gate, a good stop for tea, coffee, snacks or Indian fare. You will also find giant size coconut water here, which is the best form to beat the heat post the climb.

Ubud Art Market

Popularized by Julia Roberts for her Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love, which was shot in these bylanes, the Ubud Art Market is a double YES for bringing Bali back with you once home. Be prepared to be spoilt for choice here. Thousands of artistically hand-woven Dreamcatchers are available in all sizes and colors. You will find a hand or tote bag for every taste. Same goes for clutches and shoulder bags, picnic bags not to mention the signature handwoven Balinese bag – here you will find them in all sizes and shapes.

What to shop at Ubud Art Market

This is a generally a good place to pick beautiful silk scarves, lightweight shirts, handmade woven bags, baskets or hats, statues, kites and many other hand-crafted goods.

Bali, Ubud shopping tip: Naturally, bargaining is essential. At one point, I ran out of local currency. That’s when I got a knit-blouse for 1/3^rd the quoted price, making me feel like a fool for the rest of the deals.  So bargain hard, but if you haven’t worry not. Those purchases are a steal any which way.

Trivia: Most of the goods here are made locally, in neighboring villages. This market is more upscale than Goa Gajah and almost a kilometer long. Snake your way through hundreds of tourists that thong this lane.

Tegallalang

Tegallalang is the place for wood sculpture, wood cravings and other Balinese artifacts, all available at wholesale prices. You’ll find plenty of shops around here, housing art pieces done up by skilled local artisans and sculptors. It’s fun to browse through such a vast collection of artsy stuff. Most shops are also willing to customize the art piece and ship to your home address. Do note that the same works can be found in upmarket Bali as marked up prices. So indulge here, guilt-free.

Tegallalang is about 20 mins cab ride from Ubud.
